President Rodrigo Duterte has again taken a potshot at his staunchest critic, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, as he urged government officials to be like Jesus.
In a speech at the oathtaking of new government appointees Wednesday (December 6), Duterte shared an anecdote of how Leonardo da Vinci finished painting the “Last Supper.”
He said Da Vinci was close to finishing the painting, but needed a model for Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus.
The renowned painter supposedly found the model for Judas two years after nearly finishing the painting, during festivities in Venice.
“Pag-uwi niya sa Florence, naghanap siya ng mukha talagang evil, pareho kay Trillanes na ‘yung… Naghanap siya ng mukha ni Trillanes. Wala man siya — wala pa man PMA noon. Though hindi niya ma — – hindi niya mahanap,” Duterte said, eliciting laughter from the audience.
“But one fiesta sa — Doon nakita niya ‘yung fiesta, nakita niya ‘yung isang tao sa karaming pagkain, gaiety and everything, he saw this man nag-i-scavenge, scavenging the basura, naghanap ng pagkain. So pagdaan niya nakita niya, nakita niya, “P***** i**, Trillanes nga ito. Nandito lang pala eh,” he added.
Duterte said Da Vinci was able to convince the man to pose as Judas by saying, “You are a model for a face of evil.”
He, however, said that after the painting was finished, the man wept when he revealed to Da Vinci that he was also the model for Jesus that the painter previously talked to.
“Sabi ng… ni ‘yung sa Hudas sa painting, ‘You know, Mr. da Vinci, I was once upon a time your Jesus Christ and you took — that is me there. ‘Yung — ngayon, you drew the… Ako ‘yun, nagkalat ako sa buhay. I am one and the same person,’” Duterte said.
The President ended his speech with a reminder to government officials not to be like Judas after starting out in government like Jesus.
“I hate to see you being a Jesus Christ, only to discover in the end that you are the Judas that I have been also looking for,” he said.
